Dungeness presentation

Excuse the low quality, but its the only way i can upload this long slow video.

We decided to create an experiece for our class which was almost unbearlable. With all 40 the group asked to sit down on the floor in the small side room of our studio and being told it was important that the video was watched in its entirety, as we were worried the tutors would have enough half way through and ask us to turn it off. However, after we had set up a dark room, got the video camera on and put our ear plugs in we were ready to go.

The sound was very important in our video, which Charlie worked hard on as he has the most experience in that area. The sound consisted of the wind slowed down and the layers of the sound changed around and layered in at key points were clips from an interview with the longest resident of Dungeness, talking about change, unwanted visitors and local history and culture which tied in very well with what we were trying to portray through our video.

The image was purposely the slowest moving pan of one panoramic image to another. At first the movement is unnoticeable as it is so slow. We decided a time span of 10 minutes was appropriate - a minute per meter.

The result was great, the purpose of the video was to make you feel as if you were back in the baron wasteland that was Dungeness and thats what it did. As a viewer, even though i knew the timeline and the purposefully un satisfying ending I seemed to get lost in the video and felt like we were transformed into this never ending void of time and space.

The feed back we got was what we expected. The concept was liked by all, but the tutors had a problem with the motionless image and thought it would work better with movement of waves etc. This we felt was unimportant.
Another criticism was the choice of clips we used to break up the pan conveying the sense of doom and what may be the future of dungeness. They thought the mushroom clouds were almost too obvious and didnt let the viewer think for themselves.

The presentation was filmed to show how people reacted to the long intense situation we put them through. Its great to see peoples expressions and ways of dealing with the noise created by the p a system and the boredom of the panning image.
